![]() The QMs offer information about how well nursing homes are caring for their residents’ physical and clinical needs. While these metrics can help guide you towards facilities that offer better care, they are often incomplete and do not address all the issues you would face if you needed to stay in one of these facilities. Quality Measures (QMs) – The quality measure rating has information on 15 different physical and clinical measures for nursing home residents. Effective July 2022, only nursing homes with a five-star staffing rating will get an increase in their overall star rating. Medicare rates nursing homes and hospitals on a five-star scale based on a number of metrics ranging from quality of care to staffing ratios.For example, a nursing home with residents who had more severe needs would be expected to have more nursing staff than a nursing home where the resident needs were not as high. This rating considers differences in the levels of residents’ care need in each nursing home. Staffing – The staffing rating has information about the number of hours of care provided on average to each resident each day by nursing staff.The most recent survey findings are weighted more than the prior year. This information is gathered by trained, objective inspectors who go onsite to the nursing home and follow a specific process to determine the extent to which a nursing home has met Medicaid and Medicare’s minimum quality requirements. Inspection: An onsite health inspection kicks off the rating process. The remaining 70 percent are presented two, three, and four stars in equal proportions. Health Inspections – The health inspection rating contains the 3 most recent health inspections and investigations due to complaints. According to Leading Age, CMS awards about 10 percent of nursing homes a full five stars and 20 percent one star.There is one Overall 5-star rating for each nursing home, and a separate rating for each of the following three sources of information: Find Medicare-approved providers near you & compare care quality for nursing homes, doctors, hospitals, hospice centers, more. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) 5 star rating, also referenced as CMS five star rating, was created to help people select a safe and high-quality nursing facility. Nursing homes with 5 stars are considered to have much above average quality and nursing homes with 1 star are considered to have quality much below average.
